The Stubby is a plastic tire tool with a rubber grip on the end. It is the thickest motorcycle tire tool that I have seen, thus by living up to its name. The purpose of it is to allow you to easily change your tires without scratching and marking your wheels. The Stubby Tire Tool is available as a 2-pack for $34.99. My first trial with The Stubby, I tackled a tireball inflated tire. The Stubby is not recommended for a bib mousse, and I think this applies to tireballs as well. The thickness of the tool made it very difficult to get between the rim and the lip of the tire. I was able to accomplish this by the use of a large metal tire prying iron. The whole ordeal was pretty tricky and the Stubby does a good job, but it does not take the place my smorgasbord of tire tools that I regularly use to change tireball system tires. One cool thing I did learn about The Stubby is that it slides well against the rim. When I needed to pop the bottom side of the tire bead over the rim, I forced The Stubby in and then slid it around the lip of the rim. The diameter helped and the lower friction plastic material slid easily.
When I changed a regular inner tube wheel, The Stubby worked much better. The job went pretty smooth. I was nervous about pinching the tube because the thickness and shape of the end of the tool, so I used a conventional tool to work over the last side of my tire.
What I found in both instances was this: The Stubby does not make it easier to change a tire. It may actually make it a little bit more difficult. However, when used in conjunction with conventional tire tools, you can easily change a wheel without scratching it. I would recommend The Stubby to anyone who changes tires for money or anyone who would give a little extra time to maintain a fresh looking wheel set. Customers can no longer complain about scratches if you are using scratch free tools and you will look good with your front wheel pointed high, reflecting the sunlight into the crowd.
I would rate this product a 3.5 out of 5. It met its claims and does its job. There are other tools to make the job easier or quicker but The Stubby still has it’s benefits.
