Junkies’ Test! Acerbis X-seat

Acerbis recently introduced their new seat.  Acerbis describes the X-seat as, ” a completely new and revolutionary product.”  New and revolutionary as in a piece of the bike that your butt goes onto?  We shall see Acerbis, we shall see.

The concept is that a 1 piece seat is lighter than other seats. Also this prevents the foam from being saturated by water. The normal seats have a base, foam, and cover(3 pieces). During washes or extreme conditions, water works its way into the seat and can water log your seat. The benefits of the X-seat, are less weight and superior grip.

[SinglePic not found]You need to get off of that couch that you have been sitting on.

Let’s be honest here.  The majority of riders I talk to, like a soft cushiony butt holder.  The majority of fast riders like a stiff and rigid seat.  The main benefit of a hard seat is that the transition from sitting to standing is minimized.  Crushing a corner and then re-mounting the pegs getting ready to attack the next section is very necessary for the fast racers.  Also, there is slightly more bike control while going through the corner with a more rigid seat.

With that being said, the X-seat is really firm.  This is no doubt because it was developed by fast racers.  If you want a soft seat then either decide to be a man and get this one anyway, or don’t purchase the X-Seat.

Grip action!
If you are riding a bike without a gripper seat cover, then you will be amazed how much more controlled and less fatigued you are with a tractable seat.  The X-Seat does a great job of having grip available but not too much grip.  With too much grip it is hard to change body positioning on the bike.

Fitment/Installation
It should be pretty simple to install a new seat.  It goes exactly like a stocker but because the base is a more flexible material then it takes maybe an extra 30 seconds to get it right.  This really shouldn’t be an issue to you.  If your seat comes off during a race for any reason, then an extra 30 seconds is the least of your worries.

Durability
I’ve been using the seat for about 2 months now and its going great.  No news is good news.  I have heard of 1 person breaking his X-seat but I think it was an earlier manufacturing run of the product.    The cushion has broken in slightly, but it is still nice and firm after a couple GNCCs and some other riding.

General Wrap Up/Is it worth the $200?
I say it is worth the price.  It is slightly more expansive than other seats, but it is slightly better.  It is not the first thing I would change on a new bike, but if your seat has become soft and flaccid, then it is time to upgrade.

*Fun tip!  I’m shaving and saving my old seat.  For the super muddy races(Penton ’10) it helps to have a cut down seat.  What better way to take advantage of an old motorcycle part? I’m recycling it by using it as a mud part.  You’re welcome.
