Dunlop Geomax MX51 Test

So the new Dunlop is suppose to be the bees knees is it?  Well let me tell you what, it is pretty darn good.  The reason that I had decided to make the switch from my usual flavor of knob is because I was looking for more sidewall stiffness.  Yes, Charkie needs to be more stiff.  This is probably due to the fact that I use tireballs, which changes things altogether.  However, compared to other tires that I have used, I did like the Geomax 51.

For the fact that I consider myself a junky, barely scraping by and using every last penny to get to a race, then I am very price conscious.  There is a difference between “cheap” and ”conscious.”  The difference is that I will pay more with the understanding that I am getting something more.  Well the Geomax scored well in price.  Not the lowest not the highest.  I have definitely paid more for lesser goods.
Another issue with value is the length of time that the tire will last.  This tire has a full GNCC race, 3 1/2 hours for me.  The terrain was a mix of hardpack, sand, roots, and some rocks.  With my past Dunlop experiences, I had expected the tire to be nearly toast after the race.  What I saw while loading up the bike was very suprising,”Not bad at all!” said I.  The tire still looked good.  I am planning on using it for the next GNCC as well.

So it does not cost too much, and it lasts well.  How does it perform?  As stated previously, the terrain was varied.  The Geomax worked well everywhere.  Almost any new tire will work well, but I like the Geomax especially in the hard pack flat corners with maybe dust berm to blow out.

These hard pack flat track style corners were exactly where I felt like I needed a stiffer tire.  When I would normally feel a slight wallow in the rear, I instead felt a consistent and steady grip.

The Geomax worked great and I am happy with my purchase.  Some negatives are, does Dunlop support offroad racing?  I’m not even sure.  Also, the mud is still a question mark.

I would give it a try if you have been considering it.  If you are happy with your current tire, then it is not night and day difference.
